Comcast Goes Prepaid With Its Xfinity TV And Internet Service
Comcast just announced its plans to introduce Xfinity Prepaid Services. This is a pay-as-you-go plan which allows customers to “refill” their subscription at any time for seven- or thirty-day periods. The service will be available later this year in Illinois, Michigan, Georgia, Florida, and Indiana and nationally by the end of 2017.
Customers interested in Xfinity Prepaid Services pay a one-time set-up fee. The fee includes a Wi-Fi modem, a Digital Television Adapter (DTA) or remote control, and thirty days of complimentary service. There are no limitations on the number of times the service can be renewed and customers can refill services on their own schedule.
This service is particularly aimed at people who are “unbanked” or people who do not have a checkings or savings account. According to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation or FDIC, nearly ten million U.S. households are unbanked and another twenty-five million are “underbanked” or lacking adequate support from a financial institution.
Comcast has also signed a deal with Boost Mobile in order to provide the Xfinity Prepaid Service at Boost Mobile locations. All 4,4000 Boost Mobile locations should offer the service by the end of 2016.
Marcien Jenckes, Executive Vice President, Consumer Services of Comcast Cable, stated, “We want to create an easy, pay-as-you-go option for people who want more flexibility and predictability when buying our services. And our partnership with Boost Mobile will give Xfinity Prepaid customers even more places where they can conveniently sign-up and pay-as-they-go.”
There are two television prepaid services. One costs the same as the Internet Prepaid Start Kit and comes with forty-five channels. The “TV Prepaid 450” includes 140 channels and starts at $120.
