Apple's OS X "Yosemite" brought a lot to the table, and while almost all of it has been good, there has been a stick in the mud. That stick is called "discoveryd", and relates to how the OS handles its networking duties. We've been hearing about this threat for what seems like forever, but now, it's really real. According to The Wall Street Journal, the United States has a mere 3.4 million IP addresses left in its stock, and those are expected to disappear at some point during the summer. There's only one solution: to accelerate the rollout of IPv6. When the IPv4 protocol was created in the 70s, it was designed with a 32-bit numbering scheme. Nokia just announced a huge acquisition today, confirming that it is purchasing one of its closest competitors in the network equipment market: Alcatel-Lucent. The purchase price was a hefty $16.6 billion in an all-stock transaction. The acquisition will allow Nokia to better compete with Chinese players like Huawei, which have flooded the market with low-cost networking equipment. According to Bernstein Research, the combined companies will take over the second place spot in the mobile network hardware market with a 35 percent share. We've always wondered if the digital world was spacious enough for Facebook, Twitter, and Google+, and it seems that the answer to that is becoming ever clearer. G+ was mocked for years by those who felt that it joined the social race too late, and that Google was simply bullying users of its other products into signing up and linking an account. Forcing folks to use a product is no great way to organically grow a passionate user base, and it appears that even Google is now realizing that. A little bit of celebrating is in order for Avago Technologies, which said it signed a definitive agreement to sell LSI's Axxia Networking Business to Intel, the world's larger supplier of semiconductors, for $650 million in cash. The boards of directors for both Avago and Intel have already approved the deal, which is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2014, barring any regulatory snags along the way. Two days after announcing plans to invest $1 billion in an ambitious cloud computing venture, Cisco Systems finds itself having to defend against a lawsuit alleging that some $43 billion in sales over the last five years infringe on patents. The company making the claim is Spherix, which describes itself as an intellectual property development company committed to the fostering and monetization of intellectual property. Wireless security has always been something of a problem. Basic WEP encryption, for example, has been beaten so soundly that it’s a wonder device makers even offer it as a security option anymore. Fortunately, we’ve had WiFi protected access 2 (WPA2) keeping our networks safe--but perhaps no longer. It's not too often that a vendor chooses to remain silent about vulnerabilities plaguing its product(s), and it's even rarer to remain silent when fixes are available. Hot on the heels of a 'TheMoon' exploit proof-of-concept being released, Linksys has both confirmed its existence, and also offers up some initial guidance. 'TheMoon' is a self-replicating piece of malware that targets a wide-range of Linksys routers, all of which can utilize a remote access feature. If this feature is enabled, a vulnerability effectively activates that allows someone to bypass the router's authentication system in order to gain access to its admin panel. Amid poor sales, Motorola Solutions is said to be looking for a buyer for its wireless LAN business. The firm is finding it tough to compete with the likes of Cisco Systems, Aruba Networks, and HP, and is even having a tough time going toe-to-toe with smaller competitors like Ubiquit Networks. Apple's WWDC keynote today focused primarily on software, as well it should have, but a bit of hardware news also made it out. On the networking side, the company's long-standing AirPort line received a new AirPort Extreme.
