SanDisk Unveils Prototype Extreme Pro SDXC Card With Incredible 1TB Of Storage
The market is transitioning faster than some expected to 4K Ultra HD resolution content, and who knows how close we are to 8K encroaching mainstream status. With that in mind, Western Digital today unveiled a 1-terabyte SDXC memory card prototype under its SanDisk subsidiary at Photokina, the world's leading trade fair for photo and video professionals.
That's a lot of storage, at least for now. The same could have been said 16 years ago when the first SanDisk 16-megabyte card hit the market. Now SanDisk has developed a prototype storage card that's around 62,500 times more capacious. More recently, SanDisk unveiled its record breaking 512GB Extreme Pro SDXC UHS-I memory card at Photokina 2014.
"Over the years our goal has remained the same; continue to innovate and set the pace for the imaging industry. The SanDisk 1TB SD card prototype represents another significant achievement as growth of high-resolution content and capacity-intensive applications such as virtual reality, video surveillance and 360 video, are progressing at astounding rates," said Dinesh Bahal, vice president, product management, Content Solutions Business Unit, Western Digital.
Western Digital didn't talk much about the underlying proprietary technology, saying only that this proves it can nearly double the capacity in the same SD card form factor as was introduced two years ago. That's encouraging for content creators who want to jump into emerging fields, such as 4K resolution and VR videos, both of which require significantly more storage space than Full HD 1080p.
There's no mention of price, though don't expect the 1TB SDXC card to come cheap. As a point of reference, SanDisk's 512GB card streets for nearly $350.
