Rovio Takes To Twitter To Announce 10 Million Downloads For Angry Birds 2
If you thought the Angry Birds franchise had soared as high as it could possibly go and there would be limited interest in yet another release, you thought wrong. Angry Birds 2, the first official sequel to the original Angry Birds title released in 2009, notched 1 million downloads in just 12 hours, and 10 million downloads in three days.
That's a far cry from the 920 million downloads the original Angry Birds has tallied to date, though it represents another fast start for yet another Angry Birds title, of which there have been several. While Angry Birds 2 is an official sequel to the original, there have been a bunch of spinoffs, like Angry Birds Star Wars and Angry Birds Transformers.
Ten million downloads in three days is proof that the Angry Bird franchise still has legs (or wings, as it were). Like the original, your job is to fling ticked off fowl at thieving pigs hiding out in different structures. New to this version are multi-stage levels, spells, and other goodies.
Angry Birds 2 is free for iOS and Android devices, hence part of the reason why there have been so many downloads so far. There are also optional in-app purchases -- you can buy gems, which can be used to buy more lives or spells.
This is actually a pretty important release for Rovio. In 2014, Rovio reported a 9 percent year-over-year decline in revenue to $158.3 million, ultimately resulting in 110 layoffs. Rovio is hoping that Angry Birds 2 will turn things around, or at least hold enough interest in the franchise until the first Angry Birds movie debuts next year.
