LG 4K TVs To Make 'Quantum Leap' In Color Reproduction Thanks To Quantum Dots
Though the holiday sales are tempting, you may want to hold off on purchasing a new 4K Ultra HD TV for a month or so. For one, the Super Bowl is fast approaching (go Patriots!), and there are always sales on large screen TVs leading up to the big game. And secondly, there are some interesting technologies that will be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next month, including "quantum dot" technology.
What is quantum dot technology? It allows you to travel back in time as you possess different people in an attempt to put them on the right path. Actually, scratch that -- we may have gotten confused with Quantum Leap (remember that show?). Quantum dot is a technology that LG Electronics promises will offer a wider color palette and improved color saturation than conventional LCD TVs.
"The technology works by harnessing nano crystals that range in size from 2 to 10 nanometers," LG explains. "Each dot emits a different color depending on its size. By adding a film of quantum dots in front of the LCD backlight, picture color reproduction rate and overall brightness are significantly improved."
Nano-sized dots already produce extra vivid colors, so adding quantum dot into the equation further enhances the picture. And when combined with LG's 4K Ultra HD In-Plane Switching (IPS) displays, viewing angles are increased by 30 percent, the company says.
LG is planning to use quantum dot technology in its 4K Ultra HD and OLED TV models coming out next year.
