HTC ‘Re’ Periscope-Shaped Action Camera Slashed From $200 to $50 In U.S.

HTC went out on a limb when designing its Re camera, a handheld recorder that's shaped like a periscope (it looks like a high tech inhaler). But it's the price that's probably holding it back more than anything else from mass adoption. It debuted at $199,putting it in direct competition with GoPro, such as the GoPro Hero+ HD ($199.99). That was before HTC slashed 75 percent off the price of its Re camera.

The Re is now on sale for $50 on HTC's website. And yes, HTC uses the words "on sale" in its listing, so it appears this is a temporary price cut and not a permanent slash. However, there's no indication as to how long the sale lasts. If you've been eyeing up the Re, this might be the cheapest you'll ever see it, save for used or refurbished models on sites like eBay and Craigslist.

HTC Re

HTC is the only place you can find the Re, new and unused, for $50. Amazon has it for $92 and change with Prime shipping (a little cheaper if going through a third-party seller), and on Best Buy it's currently on sale for $150.

When HTC first unveiled the Re last year, the company's CEO described it as a GoPro "for the rest of us." It has a 16-megapixel sensor that can capture Full HD 1080 videos at 30 frames per second and 720p 4x slow motion video, 146-degree wide angle lens with f2.8 aperture, 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, a microSD card slot, and various features such as time lapse recording and live streaming to YouTube. It's also waterproof up to 1 meter under water.

You can grab the Re on sale from HTC in white, orange, blue, or green.
