Dell Infuses XPS 15 With Gorgeous 4K Infinity Edge Display, 84 Whr Battery, GeForce GTX 960M
There’s no doubt that we at HotHardware were rather impressed with the 2015 XPS 13 when it debuted earlier this year, enough so to give it our Editor’s Choice award. Dell managed to cram a 13.3-inch 3200x1800 QHD+ display with edge-to-edge Gorilla Glass -- or in Dell parlance, an InfinityEdge display – into a 12-inch frame. If you've seen this display in the flesh, you'll note that the top and side edge bezels of the display are near non-existant.
Dell has now brought that same beautiful InfinityEdge display technology to its larger XPS 15, which the company boasts has the same footprint as a 14-inch notebook. But Dell didn’t just stay the course by using the QHD+ resolution from the smaller XPS 13. The company is also offering an optional UltraSharp 4K Ultra HD panel with 8 million pixels at 282 pixels per inch (PPI). The 350-nit display allows for 170-degree viewing angles and has 100 percent minimum Adobe RGB color.
The InfinityEdge display isn’t all that’s new; Dell also beefed up the XPS 15’s internals, giving it sixth generation Core processors, support for up to 16GB of memory and storage options that top out with a 1TB SSD. Graphics duties are handled by either integrated Intel HD Graphics 530 or a powerful GeForce GTX 960M (benchmark numbers from recent Asus product in that link) graphics processor that is paired with 2GB GDDR5 memory.
Dell is offering two battery options with the XPS 15: a 56 Whr battery and an 84 Whr battery. With a Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, NVIDIA GTX 960M GPU, a 512GB SSD, 4K UHD display and 84 Whr battery, the XPS 15 is capable of operating for up to 10 hours and 28 minutes per charge, which is nothing to scoff at. However, if you choose the aforementioned hardware, but opt for the lower resolution FHD display, rated battery life jumps to an amazing 17 hours. So while that 4K screen is pixel-dense and gorgeous, the battery life penalty might be significant.
The XPS 15, which is constructed of CNC machined aluminum and carbon fiber, has a starting weight of just 3.9 pounds and comes with an assortment of ports including two USB 3.0, one Thunderbolt 3, HDMI and an SD reader. Other features include 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, a glass touchpad, backlit keys, stereo speakers and of course Windows 10.
The XPS 15 will be available in a matter of days and pricing starts at $999 for the base config.
