The question no longer seems to be whether or not Valve will release a Linux-based console of its own -- the so-called Steam Box -- but when will it debut? Based on some comments Valve co-founder Gabe Newell made during a keynote at LinuxCon 2013, the company could launch a Steam Box as early as next week, or at least offer up some additional information about its hardware plans. Newell promised to share "the hardware opportunities we see for bringing Linux into the living room" very soon, perhaps next week. While that could simply mean more lip service about PC prototypes by third party manufacturers... Read more...
For the past several months, the Internet has been flush with rumors about a so-called Steam Box that has the potential to revolutionize PC gaming. Such things have an unfortunate way of disappearing into a place called VaporwareVille (the only "Ville" not owned by Zynga), but lest you fear the same fate awaits the Steam Box, check out what showed up at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. A new job posting seeking electrical engineers does more than hint that Valve is looking at building some type of hardware, it flat out confirms it. "For years, Valve has been all about writing software that... Read more...
The world needs another game console like it needs, well, another game console. They say 'three's a crowd' and there's already the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii, so is there really room for another player to make a stand in the living room? Valve apparently thinks so and is reportedly working on a "Steam Box" console that just might have what it takes to find a place in your home theater. Citing un-named sources, The Verge says Valve has been drafting a specification sheet along with the required software that would be required for a third-party to build a Steam Box. There was even a hand-built... Read more...
