If you thought the Angry Birds franchise had soared as high as it could possibly go and there would be limited interest in yet another release, you thought wrong. Angry Birds 2, the first official sequel to the original Angry Birds title released in 2009, notched 1 million downloads in just 12 hours, and 10 million downloads in three days. That's a far cry from the 920 million downloads the original Angry Birds has tallied to date, though it represents another fast start for yet another Angry Birds title, of which there have been several. While Angry Birds 2 is an official sequel to the original,... Read more...
Autodesk is no stranger to 3D animation and professional software. The company offers several design tools for developers, including Maya, 3ds Max, Fusion 360, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and the list goes on, though up until now, one thing you wouldn't find in Autodesk's portfolio is a game engine. That changes today. Announced at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) Europe 2015, Stingray is Autodesk's entry into the game engine business. It's built on the data driven architecture of the Bitsquid engine, which Autodesk scooped up in 2014, and supports a bunch of industry standard game development workflows.... Read more...

It's not because Bethesda doesn't want to, it's because the company can't.... Read more...
For a minute there, we thought maybe NVIDIA had forgotten all about its Shield Portable, its promising handheld game console released a couple of years ago. And if you own one, you might have thought that too -- after all, software updates have slowed to a crawl after seeing half a dozen upgrades last year. Ah, but good things come to those who wait, and for your patience, you're being rewarded Lollipop. After doling out a rather small and optional software update to SHIELD Portable devices last February, one that simply offered to improve stability and smoothness for emulators, it's been eerily... Unlike sports like baseball and football where the use of performance enhancing drugs has been a major issue at times, you would think that electronic sports would be immune from such issues. You'd also be wrong. To ensure a level playing field among participants, the Electronic Sports League (ESL) -- one of the biggest eSports organizations around -- is going to implement and enforce drug policies. What prompted the move is a recent admission by Cory "Semphis" Friesen, a professional Counter Strike: Global Offensive gamer, that he and other players on his team, Cloud9, took Adderall to gain a... Balance changes and system adjustments will fall into the former category, while the latter... Read more...
In some ways, you can think of Windows 10 as a 'do-over' for Microsoft. Windows 10 is set to achieve what Windows 8 set out to do, which is bring interoperability between totally different devices, and do it without shoving the Metro UI down users' throats. At the risk of sounding melodramatic, the revolution has already begun, and it gains steam today as Microsoft unlocks functionality for all Xbox One owners to stream their games to a Windows 10 PC. Previously that function was only available in Preview form, but as of now, it's expanded to everyone who owns an Xbox One and has a PC or tablet... Read more...
The games industry lost a giant this weekend as Nintendo issued a statement saying its fourth president and Chief Executive Officer Satoru Iwata passed away on Saturday. He was only 55 years old at the time of his death. According to Nintendo, Iwata's passing was "due to a bile duct growth," for which he underwent surgery a year ago.In June of last year, Iwata issued a letter to shareholders stating that "an issue was detected" during a "routine physical examination." The issue turned out to be a growth in his bile duct, though because it was detected and operated on at an early stage, there was... Read more...

Mac users unhappy with the problem-riddled launch of Final Fantasy XIV are eligible for a full refund, Square Enix director Naoki Yoshida said today in an official post to gamers. He also announced that the title is being yanked from store shelves until the game performs correctly and the system requirements have been communicated accurately. The concession follows harsh criticism from players who bought the title only to encounter game-crippling problems. Yoshida discussed two major problems that plagued the game’s launch and apologized for both. One issue was that the company provided incorrect... Read more...
Today's video games can cost more to make than a blockbuster movie. The level of graphical detail is pretty amazing in some cases, and when you throw in ambient sound effects and an engaging storyline, it's easy to be sucked into a virtual world. It shouldn't really be surprising, then, that college students enjoy being scared by horror games, according to a recent study. What's perhaps eye opening, however, is that researchers in the U.S. found that playing games scares people more than watching movies. That's based on the findings of assistant professor Nicole Martins and student Teresa Lynch... Read more...
You no longer have to wonder what Super Mario would look like if he was rendered in 3D using the Unreal Engine 4. What, the thought never crossed your mind? Well it did for YouTube user aryoksini, the same cat who showed off samples Super Mario 64 remade in HD using the Blender engine. As nifty as that was, his newest project is even better. Using the Unreal Engine 4, aryoksini created a 3D world in which you see Mario like you've never seen him before. Not that we haven't seen Mario in 3D before, just not as well rendered as this -- it's equal parts awesome and disturbing to see Nintendo's iconic... Read more...
Every Fallout fan who didn't send Bethesda Softworks thousands of bottle caps is now kicking themselves. Well, that's assuming they had a stockpile of bottle caps to begin with. A guy named Seth did -- around 2,240 beer caps that he amassed over a seven-year period while attending college. With Fallout 4 on the horizon, he sent the beer caps to Bethesda in hopes of scoring a copy of the game, and the stunt worked! "Fallout 3 was my favorite game for several years, so I made the rational choice to start saving up bottle caps," Seth explained on imgur. "Turns out 4.5 years of undergrad and 3 years...
