If you spot a developer for Bethesda Game Studios in a bar, buy the guy or gal a beer (or Nuka Cola Quantum), it's well earned. How so? The latest update for Fallout 4 introduces a laundry list of fixes, both for general gameplay and for specific quests, plus adds a handful of new features to boot. This is anything but a generic update. The patch is available as an automatic download for PC players on Steam and will be available to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 later this week. Among its highlights, the latest Fallout 4 update adds a new ambient occlusion setting called HBAO+. You probably recognize... Read more...
Sorry, not sorry Denver Broncos fans, but your battered team led by Satan Manning is going to lose the Super Bowl. Yes, that's a prediction of a bitter New England Patriots fan (me), but also that of Electronic Arts' Madden NFL 16 simulation. Before you dismiss it as just a video game, consider that there are plenty of reasons why you should take the prediction seriously. EA's Madden franchise has a favorable history in predicting the Super Bowl winner. How favorable? Try 9 out of 12. That's right, out of 12 attempts at predicting a Super Bowl winner by way of a game simulation, EA's Madden titles... Read more...
Nintendo hasn't been real forthcoming with details about its next-generation console codenamed "NX," but in lieu of official information, there's been plenty of rumors and speculation. One of the latest bit of speculative news to hit the web is that Nintendo is on target to launch its NX handheld by the end of the year. That assumption is based on a flat-panel shipment report by market research firm IHS. The report specifically calls out Nintendo's forthcoming console as a reason why it expects flat-panel shipments to see a bit of an uptick in shipments this year."We expect a small recover in shipments... A dispute involving scratched Xbox 360 discs that stems back nearly will be heard by the Supreme Court of the United States, which will decide if there's enough cause for Microsoft to face class-action lawsuit. While that sounds like an easy task, lower courts have disagreed on the matter, hence how it was able to reach the Supreme Court. At issue is a lawsuit alleging that Xbox 360 consoles had a tendency to scratch optical discs and that Microsoft knew it was a problem. The lawsuit essentially blames the symptom on a design flaw, one in which there was little to no protection in place to prevent... Read more...
Professional gaming -- as in video games -- isn't new by any means. Fatal1ty (real name Johnathan Wendel) entered the scene way back in 1999 and pioneered the category by dominating in titles like Quake III Arena. Since then the category has only grown, albeit in the background of mainstream media. That might change as sports coverage giant ESPN launches a new esports vertical. ESPN's esports section aims to offer comprehensive coverage in the world of competitive gaming. Like other sections of the site, it will include video, news related to the category, offseason analysis and grades, and more.... Read more...
Remember when being a Prime member at Amazon simply meant free two-day shipping on qualified items? More downloadable content is headed to Mortal Kombat X, the bone crunching fighting game that allows you to pit not just franchise characters like Scorpion and Johnny Cage against each other, but iconic foes from the big screen like Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th) and Predator. Get ready for another batch of awesome playable characters. As revealed in a new gameplay trailer, the Kombat Pack 2 introduces the Xenomorph from Alien, Leatherface, Triborg, and Bo' Rai Cho. After complaints surfaced that some backwards compatible Xbox 360 games weren't running properly on the Xbox One, software engineers at Microsoft got busy working on a system update, one that is now available. Early reports are that certain Xbox 360 games are running much better after applying the update. Microsoft's Major Nelson (Larry Hryb) stated in a Twitter post that the changes amounted to a "few behind the scenes bug fixes" and that no new features have been added this time around. He also confirmed that Microsoft didn't provide any release notes for this latest update, leaving Xbox One... Read more...
The cool thing about playing Duck Hunt on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was that you got to point a plastic gun at the television and shoot at fowl (or clay discs). It offered a deeper level of immersion than what would have been possible with a controller. Such is the pitch for a new Kickstarter project called Rail Gun. Rail Gun is a series of attachments designed to work with your existing Air Soft gun. The pieces attach to any standard Air Soft gun to give you a "truly realistic and immersive experience for FPS games." The beauty in being compatible with any standard Air Soft gun is... Read more...
Rise of the Tomb Raider has found its way to Steam, though you can't purchase it just yet (not for PC, anyway). However, it doesn't look like you'll have to wait long. The listing on Steam indicates the game will be available in "January 2016," which coincides with previous reports that it would launch to PC in early 2016. Publisher Square Enix released the newest Lara Croft title to Xbox One and Xbox 360 a little more than a month ago on November 10 in the U.S. When it was first announced at Gamescom earlier in the year, it was pitched as an exclusive Xbox game, though Microsoft later said it... Thirsty gamers rejoice, a second shipment of Nuka Cola Quantum is heading to Target stores, Bethesda announced on its Fallout 4 Twitter account. The popular post-apocalyptic beverage, which is a replica of the in-game drink that restores hit points, sold out in quick order the first time Target offered it. It was always meant to be a limited edition item. Bethesda partnered with Jones Soda Company to produce the blue-colored beverage, which is the same as the company's berry lemonade soda but with Nuka Cola Quantum packaging. Though it was meant to be a limited run, Bethesda was probably surprised... Read more...
Go scream it from a rooftop, Half-Life 3 is coming! Once you've done that, climb down from your roof (carefully) and stop acting like a crazy person. Here's the thing, Valve would be insane not to release a Half-Life 3 at some point in time, but whether or not the third major installment is imminent is a thing of mystery. . The thing that's sparking all the Half-Life 3 hysteria on the web is a list of packages on Steam, one of which contains a reference to "Half Life 3" (without the hyphen). There's a website called Steam Database (SteamDB) that keeps track of these things, and it's been successful... Read more...
Never mind that Black Friday and Cyber Monday are both becoming specks in the rear view mirror, the deals, they just keep coming.
