ASUS ROG G752VT Gaming Laptop Review: G-Sync And Skylake United
Intro To The ASUS ROG G752VT
New processor architectures inevitably lead to a flurry of refreshed product lines from PC makers. That's how things have been playing out with Skylake, a "tock" in Intel's tick-tock design cadence and its 6th generation Core processor family. As usual, ASUS is on the bleeding edge with new Skylake systems ready to go, one of which is the ROG G752VT.
The specific model ASUS sent us is the ROG G752VT-DH72, a slightly toned down update to the ROG G751JY-DB72 we reviewed back in September. Like that laptop, the G752VT falls into the desktop replacement category and takes aim at gamers with high-end hardware and, the coup de grâce, a 17.3-inch IPS panel supporting NVIDIA's G-Sync technology. If this were a rap battle, mentioning G-Sync on a laptop would come right before the mic drop.
Of course, no one feature can make or break a laptop, gaming or otherwise -- it's a sum of all parts. In this instance, the equation consists of an Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor paired with 16GB of DDR4-2133 system memory. Adding to the awesome is a speedy 128GB PCIe-based solid state drive flanked by a 1TB hard drive for grunt storage tasks, and a discrete NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M GPU with 3GB of GDDR5 of onboard memory thrown into the mix.
The aforementioned G751JY brought more RAM (24GB), a beefier 256GB SSD, and a more muscular GeForce GTX 980M to the laptop battle line. If that's what you want, ASUS offers higher end G752 configurations that meet or exceed that level of gaming extravagance, though you'll pay more for the privilege. The selling point for this configuration is that it leaves more jingle in your pocket without bumping you over to the slow lane.
