Lenovo Launches Mainstream Moto Z Play And Stunning 12MP Hasselblad True Zoom Moto Mod
But while the Moto Z and Moto Z Force beat their chests with 5.5-inch QHD displays, Snapdragon 820 processors and 4GB of RAM, there’s definitely enough room in the family for another, less expensive model. That brings us to the Moto Z Play, which Lenovo announced today for the U.S. market.
Like its overachieving siblings, and for compatibility reasons (as you’ll see later), the Moto Z Play uses a 5.5-inch AMOLED display with a screen resolution of 1080p instead of 1440p. Likewise, the Moto Z Play is toned down slightly on firepower, as it comes with a Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor and 3GB of RAM. The efficient SoC coupled with a large 3,500 mAh battery means that the Moto Z Play has up to 50 hours of battery life, for multi-day romps without worrying about finding a wall outlet. And when you do need to plug in, the Moto Z Play’s TurboPower charging can get you 9 hours of runtime in just 15 minutes. Also onboard is a 16MP rear camera with laser autofocus and a front-facing, wide-angle selfie camera with LED flash.
However, the headlining feature here is that the Moto Z Play also supports Moto Mods, which include the JBL SoundBoost Speaker and Moto Insta-Share Projector. However, Lenovo today is announcing the arrival of the Hasselblad True Zoom Moto Mod. We always associate the name Hasselblad with excellent image quality, and this Moto Mod doesn’t disappoint. The camera features a 12MP image sensor, 10x optical zoom, optical image stabilization, xenon flash, and allows you to shoot in RAW format. We’ve had some hands-on time with the Moto Z Play and the Hasselblad True Zoom, and we must say that both are equally impressive, with the latter far outshining the smartphone’s onboard 16MP sensor.
The Moto Z Play already has support built-in for the Hasselblad True Zoom, while Moto Z and Moto Z Force users can download a software update, which is available right now, to enable support for the accessory.
The Moto Z Play will be available for preorder on September 15th, with deliveries commencing in October. It will be priced at $449 unlocked. You can also purchase the Moto Z Play Droid from Verizon starting September 8th for $17/month on the Verizon device payment plan (or $408 full price). The Hasselblad True Zoom will be priced at $299 at Motorola.com, or you can get it from Verizon (starting September 15th) for $249. Verizon is also running a limited time promotion where when you buy one Moto Mod, you get a second Moto Mod of equal or lesser value for 50 percent off.
