Acer Infuses Its Predator Gaming Notebooks With NVIDIA's Latest GeForce GTX 10-series GPUs

One thing is for sure: if you're in the market for a new gaming notebook - especially one featuring NVIDIA's brand-new GeForce cards - you're not going to suffer from a lack of choice. We've written about a handful of different vendor notebooks so far, and not to be forgotten, Acer has finally tossed its hat into the ring.

Acer hasn't produced brand-new models to support NVIDIA's latest GPUs, but instead updated its popular Predator 15 and Predator 17 notebooks. However, there is something a bit odd: Acer hasn't yet said exactly which GPUs will be featured in these models. That said, the outgoing models supported the 970M and 980M - the top-tier options of their generation - so we'd imagine that the updates will feature the GTX 1070 and GTX 1080.

As covered in our launch article, NVIDIA's latest mobile graphics cards are ridiculously powerful - much more so than the previous generation (and those were fast). In a matchup between the 970M and 1070, we found there to be a 2.13x increase in performance, based on 3DMark. Put another way: from one generation to the next, the same class of card increased in performance by ~213%.

That kind of performance will deliver quality gaming experiences at 1440p; many times at a constant 60 FPS (though some titles might require some tweaking). If you want to basically guarantee 60 FPS at 1440p, you might want to opt for the GTX 1080. That card can also deliver quality 4K experiences, but don't expect 60 FPS unless the games are simpler in nature.

As seen in the above shot, the Predator notebook models sport a sleek red-hued design, and to make sure temperatures are never an issue, the back features generous exhausts. To improve things even further, Acer offers the Predator FrostCore, a Cooler Master-designed cooler that slides into the optical drive bay slot. Excuse the pun, but how cool is that?

Other perks include the use of Killer Ethernet, keyboard LED lighting, macro capabilities, and a full complement of I/O ports (including full-sized DisplayPort and HDMI ports).

Considering the fact that we don't even know which models will feature which of NVIDIA's new 10-series GPUs, it probably won't surprise you to learn that we don't know about pricing either, or availability for that matter. But, we don't expect that information to take too long to arrive.
