Sony Xperia XZ And Xperia X Compact Will Arrive In U.S. Without Fingerprint Readers

At a time when biometric security solutions seem to be gaining traction in the mobile market, Sony for whatever reason has decided to remove the fingerprint scanner from its Xperia XZ and Xperia X Compact handsets before releasing them in the United States. The curious decision comes after Sony released the same handsets with fingerprint readers in the European market.

A visit to Sony Mobile's U.S. website shows the full specs and list of features for each phone, and in both cases there's no mention of a fingerprint scanner. It's possible that Sony simply forgot to jot the feature down, though the more likely scenario is it simply decided to remove the biometric security measure from its forthcoming handsets. It wouldn't be the first time Sony's done this—it did the same thing with the Xperia X Performance, Xperia Z5, and Xperia Z5 Compact.

Sony Xperia XZ and Xperia X Compact

While the decision is certainly odd, it's not necessarily a deal killer on what are otherwise decently configured handsets. The bigger of the two, the Xperia XZ, sports a 5.2-inch HD 1080p (1920x1080) display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage (64GB in the dual-SIM version), microSD card slot, USB Type-C port, and 2,900 mAh battery with Qnovo Adaptive Charging technology.

As for the smaller model, the Xperia X Compact sports a similar set of features but with a 4.6-inch HD 720p (1280x720) display, Snapdragon 650 SoC, and a slightly less capacious 2,700 mAh battery. Both handsets will ship with Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Beyond the core features and lack of fingerprint scanner, the big focus is on camera performance. Both models sport a 23-megapixel rear camera with triple imaging sensing technology, predictive hybrid autofocus, and up to ISO 12800 for superior low-light performance.

On the front, the Xperia X Compact totes a 5-megapixel front shooter with a 22mm/90-degree wide-angle lens, while the Xperia XZ gets a 13-megapixel shooter.
