Asus And AT&T Team Up To Offer Super Cheap, Pre-Paid ZenFone 2

ASUS and AT&T have teamed up to announce the new ZenFone 2E, an affordable smartphone for budget-conscious buyers who want a capable handset without a bloated price tag. While it lacks some of the bells of the whistles of the regular ZenFone 2 (check out our review) and isn't quite as powerful, consumers may find a fair bit of value here at the $120 asking price (on AT&T pre-paid GoPhone plans).

Let's start with the specs. The ZenFone 2E bullies into the budget category wielding a 5-inch IPS display with a 1280x720 (HD) resolution (294 ppi). It's powered by a dual-core Intel Atom Z2560 processor based on the chip maker's Clover Trail+ microarchitecture. It's clocked at 1.6GHz, has 1MB of cache, and supports Hyper Threading.

Graphics are handled by a PowerVR SGX544 MP2 GPU that's capable of handling a bit of gameplay and processing HD video.

It also has 1GB of RAM, 8GB of eMMC storage expandable via microSD (up to 64GB), 2-megapixel front-facing camera, 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with auto-focus and LED flash, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, 3.5mm audio jack, GPS, 4G LTE connectivity, 2,500 mAh battery (non-removable), and Android 5.0 Lollipop with ZenUI out of the box.

"ASUS is excited to launch the ZenFone 2E with AT&T. The ASUS ZenFone 2E embodies our philosophy of empowering luxury for everyone," says Benson Lin, corporate vice president and general manager for mobile communications, ASUS. "Working with AT&T enables us to deliver an excellent smartphone experience on a high-speed 4G LTE network to consumers on a budget."

The ASUS ZenFone 2E is available now from Walmart and Target stores in the U.S. and will be in AT&T locations starting July 24 (this Friday). Best Buy will also carry the device beginning August 2.
