Apple Will Soon Give Lowball Trade-In Offers On Your Busted iPhones

It's a terrible feeling to break your phone. I once sat in a jacuzzi for a full 30 minutes before I realized that my iPhone 4s was in my pocket (yes, my swimming trunks at the time had pockets)—oops! No amount of time spent in a tub of rice could save it at that point, though luckily I had ponied up for accidental damage insurance through a third-party, so it worked out in the end. Otherwise, I might have been looking at a phone upgrade, and to encourage that route, Apple is reportedly rolling out an iPhone trade-in program for damaged handsets.

Apple already has an iPhone trade-in program, but it won't do you a lick of good if you're rocking an older handset that's broken. It's the exception to the program, though not for long. When Apple updates its policy, you'll be able to trade-in a busted iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, or iPhone 6 Plus towards the purchase of a new phone. That means if you dropped your iPhone and shattered the display or if the cameras or buttons no longer work, you have an out.

Broken iPhone

Whether or not that ends up being the best option will depend on your particular circumstance. It's not as though Apple plans to line your pockets with trade-in currency for your broken handset—the unofficial numbers floating around are $50 for an iPhone 5s, $200 for an iPhone 6, and $250 for an iPhone 6s Plus.

Depending on where you are in your contract with your current wireless carrier, it might make more financial sense to go a subsidized route or take advantage of some other special offer on a new phone model. But if not, at least Apple is offering something for your broken device.

in addition to tweaking its trade-in program, it's also said that Apple will soon begin offering to install screen protectors on iPhones. The installation will take place in-store, presumably at no cost, using a special machine that's able to apply the protectors without any dust bubbles or debris underneath.
