Microsoft has a problem on its hands when it comes to Surface Pro 3 tablets, which have been in circulation for roughly two years. Customers have reported that battery life on some of these tablets has been inexplicably deteriorating in recent months, with no apparent fix in sight. The Microsoft Community forums have been flooded with complaints from users that have been afflicted by the battery drain problem. One common theme that does appear to be emerging throughout this whole ordeal is that the majority of the Surface Pro 3 tablets that are having issues feature SIMPLO batteries. To make... Windows 10 continues to gain ground on Windows 7 in the race for market share dominance. Though the gap between the two is still rather large, Windows 10 has managed to find its way onto more than 19 percent of the world's PCs, according to the latest data from Net Market Share. That's up from 11.85 percent at the beginning of the year. It's been a steady climb for Windows 10, which released to the public a year ago this month. The OS got off to a fast start, hitching a ride on 5.21 percent of PCs in its first month of availability and nearly doubling its position by the end of the year with a... Read more...
If you want to get your hands on Microsoft’s brand new Xbox One S console, the fastest way to do it is to grab a 2TB bundle, which will be available on August 2nd. However, the 2TB Xbox One also happens to be the most expensive version, coming in at $399. If $399 is out of your budget range for a new console, Microsoft just announced the availability date for the two cheaper Xbox One S consoles: the $349 1TB and $299 500GB models. Both will be available on August 23rd, although pre-orders for both consoles open today. The Xbox One S Madden NFL 17 Bundle comes with (of course) a copy of Madden NFL... Read more...
Word is ubiquitous these days (as are the rest of its Office app counterparts), which is possible thanks to decades of development and advancement by Microsoft. But despite the fact that Word may have a few grey whiskers jutting from its chinny chin chin, this old dog is definitely up for learning some new tricks. And today, Microsoft has revealed that its machine learning prowess has resulted in a new feature that will make it easier for researchers to search for information without impeding their workflow. If you’re writing a research paper, Microsoft’s new Researcher tool for Office 365 brings... Read more...
Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney isn't a fan of what Microsoft is doing with Windows 10, and specifically its effort to promote the Windows Store by pushing the Universal Windows Platform (UWP) model. We already know this, but lest anyone think Sweeney has cooled off since the last time he raked Microsoft over the coals, he had more to say on the matter, accusing the Redmond outfit of being sneaky in its attempt to overthrow Steam. "There are two programming interfaces for Windows and every app has to choose one of them. Every Steam app - every PC game for the past few decades - has used Win32. It's... Read more...
Windows 10 is a fine operating system that in many ways is far superior to its Windows 8.x and Windows 7 predecessors. Windows 10, however, has also gotten a pretty bad reputation due to steps that Microsoft has taken to push the operating system onto consumers in an effort to reach one billion installs by the end of 2018 (a goal that now is completely out of reach). But we shouldn’t let Microsoft’s overaggressive upgrade campaign make us lose sight of the benefits that Windows 10 offers. And we would be remiss if we didn’t mention that Microsoft’s free upgrade offer for Windows 10 expires this... Read more...
When it comes to Microsoft’s gaming consoles, the upcoming Xbox One S is the “new hotness”, so to speak. The Xbox One S is 40 percent slimmer than its predecessor and includes a new wireless controller (which now supports Bluetooth), an additional USB port, 4K support, and an IR blaster. It will also be available in three capacities: 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB). To make room on brick and mortar (and online) store shelves, Microsoft is once again cutting the price of the current Xbox One to drive sales. The entry-level 500GB console was reduced from $349 to $299 ahead of E3, and dropped again to $279 in... Read more...
We reported earlier on France's demands to Microsoft with regards to bolstering its Windows 10 OS to better protect user data, and ultimately, their privacy. The fact that a watchdog would target Microsoft for collecting too much data probably strikes no one as a surprise, as that very complaint has been one shared by many users since the launch of Microsoft's latest OS. In the complaint, France's Chair of the National Data Protection Commission noted a couple of big issues, from the fact that the PIN code can be entered as many times as an attacker needs it to be and also that certain mechanisms... After multiple delays, Microsoft’s enterprise-focused Surface Hubs finally began shipping to customers in late March. And despite the fact that Microsoft raised the price of the 55-inch and 84-inch collaborative displays by $2,000 across the board, from $4,999 to $6,999 and from $19,999 to $21,999 respectively, it appears that Microsoft is selling every Surface Hub that it can produce. Companies seem to be enamored with the Surface Hubs, and in a statement released to Petri, Microsoft says that demands for the display has been incredible: Demand for Surface Hubs is very strong and exceeded initial... France's data privacy and protection watchdog has ordered Microsoft to put the brakes on what it deems is excessive user data collection in Windows 10. It also took issue with certain elements of Windows 10 that need to be more secure, such as entering the four-character PIN to log into the operating system, and privacy breaches stemming from the browser. The Chair of the National Data Protection Commission (CNIL) notified Microsoft of its decision following an investigation by a special contact group created by various authorities in the European Union. CNIL says the investigation "revealed many... Read more...
When we last visited Microsoft’s upgrade nag screens, the company got incredibly bold by taking over Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users’ computers with a full screen prompt to upgrade to Windows 10. Now with the deadline to upgrade to Windows 10 a little over a week away, Microsoft is pulling out all the stops to encourage customers that have previously dragged their feet to “get with the program.” Microsoft is hoping to grab your attention right away by adding a little yellow triangle with an exclamation point on it overlaid on top of the standard Get Windows 10 icon that resides in the system tray.... Edge is the Internet Explorer replacement that Microsoft has been increasingly trying to promote as an alternative to competing browsers on the market (i.e., Google Chrome, Firefox and Opera). Microsoft has been especially adamant about vilifying Chrome, continually pointing out the browser’s well-known pennant for chewing through laptop batteries at an incredible clip. Microsoft came out swinging in late June, showing Chrome coming in dead last in battery tests (by a large margin). Microsoft struck again last week with benchmarks showing that Edge far outpaced Chrome in Netflix streaming... Read more...
When Microsoft officially announced the Xbox One S just over a month ago, it revealed that the console would be available in three storage capacities: 500GB, 1TB and 2TB priced at $299, $349 and $399 respectively. The first model that will be available to purchase is the 2TB console, which Microsoft at the time said would be available in August. Today, Microsoft got a lot more specific with that launch date, confirming that the 2TB Xbox One S will ship on August 2nd. Those that have already pre-ordered the 2TB Xbox One S will have their consoles arrive on the same date. If you haven’t already preordered... Read more...
Microsoft is definitely doing everything in its power to push Windows 10 onto customers before the July 29th free upgrade offer expenses. However, if performing the Windows 10 upgrade on your current PC is too difficult, you can always take it into a Microsoft Store to have the “Answer Desk” crew install the operating system for you for free. And that’s where interesting part comes in. Microsoft has been running a rather intriguing promotion right under our noses for the past few weeks, and if you by chance qualify, you could become the owner of a brand new PC. Simply bring your compatible PC into... Read more...
