Sony Xperia Z5 And Z5 Compact Land In U.S. Priced At $600 And $500 Respectively
It was a year ago this month that Sony sold off its Vaio PC brand to a Japanese investment firm, freeing itself up to concentrate more fully on the ever growing mobile market. The long-term impact of that decision has yet to be determined, but here in the short-term, Sony has a couple of slick new handsets it's shipping to U.S. customers—the Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact, both of which are unlocked.

For now, it appears as though Sony's efforts to build a "stable business" means focusing on GSM networks. If you're looking to pair one of Sony's new handsets up with a major wireless carrier, you'll have to choose between AT&T and T-Mobile, both of which run on GSM networks—the phones aren't compatible with the CDMA networks that Sprint and Verizon run on.
Compatibility aside, the Xperia Z5 is a respectable handset with a 5.2-inch Full HD 1080p display powered by a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor and 3GB of RAM. It also has 32GB of internal storage expandable via microSD, 5MP front camera, 23MP rear camera, NFC support, 4G LTE, and curiously enough, Android 5.1 Lollipop instead of Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
As its name implies, the Xperia Z5 Compact is a bit smaller with a 4.6-inch display sporting a regular HD (720p) resolution. It's powered by the same 64-bit Snapdragon 810 SoC as its bigger brother, but has 2GB of RAM instead of 3GB. Otherwise, the feature highlights are pretty much the same.
One thing Xperia handsets are known for is their waterproof design. That holds true with these newest models—both carry a rating of IP65 and IP68 for water and dust resistance, meaning you don't have to panic if it starts to rain. Sony says you can even rinse off your device under a faucet, just be sure that all ports and covers are firmly closed.
