Samsung and EA Chillingo Bring "100% Indie" Game Hub To Google Play

Although Samsung sells more smartphones than Apple, its app store doesn't hold a candle to what the Cupertino company has built. The same can be true for all other smartphone vendors as well. One of the reasons smartphones really took hold of the world is because of what Apple had accomplished with its App Store, and now everyone else wants to pull the same level of success off. How? Developer incentives.

Both Apple and Google take a 30% cut from whatever a developer makes, which hasn't bode too well for those looking to maximize their profits. So Samsung, in a partnership with EA and its Chillingo platform, is soon to launch a service for Android dubbed "100% Indie" - that is, one where out of the gate, indie developers can reap 100% of the reward.

Contre Jour for Android

I said "out of the gate" because that perk lasts all but six months. Past that and leading up to the first year, Samsung will take 10%, and for the entire next year, that gets bumped to 20%. After two years, Samsung will match the other app stores by taking a 30% cut.

Compared to the competition, what Samsung is offering here seems a little too good to be true, but the fact of the matter is, companies have to do whatever they can in order to compete. It'll be some time before we can see if this initiative takes off, but if I were a developer, that 100% figure would look very tempting. It's made all the better by the fact that you're allowed to sell your app in multiple stores, so on the surface, it looks like you have nothing to lose.
