Iowa To Intro Driver's License Smartphone App In 2015

Isn't it amazing what our "apps" have become? It used to be that we'd use mobile apps for simple tasks or the odd game, but in recent years, we've gained the ability to use them for real-world activities, like booking a ride, checking into the airport, or paying for a coffee using a digital gift card. Now, it looks like Iowa is ready to take things to the next level, by allowing its citizens to replace a vital piece of information with a mobile app: Their driver's license.

When I first read this, I admit I had to do a double-take. It just struck me as so unexpected that a government would allow such an important piece of someone's information to not only be stored on their mobile device, but to be valid for use in traffic stops of airport screenings (which would only be in Iowa, at the moment). That surprise doesn't mean that I'm totally against this; in fact, I think it's pretty amazing.

Iowa Digital Drivers License

I wouldn't blame you if you thought that this move was one used to generate additional revenue, but surprisingly enough, this digital license will be available for free to anyone who wants to take advantage of it. It's not mentioned if regular ID cards would be included for those without driver's licenses, but I'd have to assume that they would be.

I doubt many would argue that a digital driver's license offers a number of benefits, but many are going to be concerned about the level of security they'd offer. But the state ensures us all that the system is very secure, and even if someone were to find your device, they wouldn't be able to access the license without a pin code. Another thing not mentioned here is the encryption used, so let's hope that what is used is virtually bulletproof.

Are you ready to move your driver's license over to your mobile phone?
