Apple’s Mysterious ‘Project Titan’ Tesla Fighter Reportedly Delayed Until 2021
It looks like Tesla will not be getting competition from Apple anytime soon. Apple’s rumored electric car, “Project Titan”, has reportedly been delayed until 2021 due to complications with its development.
Why is the car being delayed? Well, no one really knows. Some theorize that the delay is due to the departure of Project Titan leader Steve Zadesky this past year. Others have argued that the brothers working on the project -- Brian, Kevin, and Michael Sumner -- have not finished developing the software needed to capture the tremendous amounts of data Apple cars will generate. Apple will need to majorly improve their cloud infrastructure if they want to compete with Tesla.
Apple has yet to confirm if plans for the electric car even exists, let alone if it will be self-driving. Apple CEO Tim Cook has responded evasively when asked about the project. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has described Apple’s car project as the “worst-kept secret” in Silicon Valley. Musk has even called Apple “Tesla’s Graveyard,” a place where Tesla engineers go if they are not up to scratch.
The nonexistent car has already caused a bit of controversy. Some analysts claim that a new product such as a car would reverse the company’s current revenue decline. Others contend that Apple has no business in trying to develop a vehicle. Former GM executive Bob Lutz believes that an Apple vehicle would be a money pit. He stated last year, “Apple has no experience. There’s no reason to assume Apple will do a better job than General Motors, Ford, Volkswagen, Toyota or Hyundai.”
Tesla has already experienced its fair share of ups and downs. While the company received an unprecedented number of pre-orders, it has also failed to keep up with shipments. Its self-driving car has already experienced its first fatal accident. Apple could expect a similar roller coaster if they truly are building their own vehicles.
