We’re less than a month away from the retail release of Windows 10 and the tech community is eagerly awaiting its arrival. Five Microsoft researchers and a Carnegie Mellon University student joined forces this year to answer one of life’s most pressing questions: Can a computer be funny? To find the answer, researchers developed as computerized funnyman, CAHOOTS, to make jokes based on what researchers know about online humor. As the researchers note in a paper titled, “OMG UR Funny! Computer-Aided Humor with an Application to Chat,” computer-generated humor (CGH) has proved elusive to computer scientists. Software can be designed to create puns and other jokes, but creating humor that really makes people laugh has... Read more...
Rumors have been swirling about the Microsoft's still unannounced Lumia 940 XL, though thanks to multiple leaks, we have at least a rough idea of what to expect. It seems odd for Microsoft to add a new SKU for its Surface Pro 3 so late after its initial release (the Surface Pro 3 was originally announced on May 20, 2014 and went on sale one month later). Yet here we are, one year later, and we’re seeing the introduction of a new $1299 SKU that bring the price of entry for Intel Core i7 power a bit lower. The new SKU will get you a Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, and a 128GB SSD. The same $1299 price will also buys you a Surface Pro 3 with a Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB. So customers looking at Surface Pro 3s at this price point will have to... Read more...
SpaceX was hoping that it’s third attempt at a controlled Falcon 9 landing on a floating barge would be a charm, but those hopes went up in smoke this morning. In fact, SpaceX didn’t even get a chance to get close to landing on the barge, as the Falcon 9 launch vehicle exploded during ascent. The SpaceX Falcon 9, which lifted off from Cape Canaveral promptly at 10:21am EST for its seventh Commercial Resupply Services flight (CRS-7), broke apart over the Atlantic Ocean just minutes after liftoff. Onboard were over two and a half tons of supplies for the crew members aboard the International Space... Read more...
Since it unveiled HoloLens in January, Microsoft has wanted us all to believe that its AR product can deliver an out-of-this-world experience. Now, it's proven that it's willing to go to great lengths to prove it. In a partnership with NASA for a project called Sidekick, Microsoft is going to be sending two HoloLens units up to the International Space Station, with transit provided by SpaceX, during its seventh resupply mission to the station. With astronauts equipped with HoloLens, NASA hopes that it will help both improve the work they're able to do, as well as make things easier for the engineers... Read more...
Since Satya Nadella took over as CEO at Microsoft last February, we've witnessed the company go through a revitalization. Some of the company's missteps in recent years are a secret to no one, but as it stands today, the company's future seems more positive than it has in quite some time. It's likewise no secret that Nadella is keen on keeping this momentum going, long after Windows 10 sees its release at the end of next month. He reiterated a number of points in a private email to employees which GeekWire happened to obtain. In it, he draws the future of the company as being one where it's nimbler... Read more...
A desktop wallpaper might seem like a simple thing, but when we're talking about a brand-new operating system, its importance can't be understated. The wallpaper chosen can directly impact someone's first impressions of an OS -- a nice picture can put you in the right frame of mind, and perhaps instill a little excitement. Microsoft knows this very well. Its Windows XP wallpaper has become iconic, and since then, the company's made sure that the first wallpaper its customers see brings a positive vibe to the OS. And what OS needs positive vibes more than Windows 10 right now? It's without question... Read more...
Microsoft continues its quest for multi-platform domination with the official release of Office for Android smartphones. Microsoft of course has Office software available for its own Windows and Windows Phone (and future Windows 10 Mobile) operating systems along with iOS and OS X, but today marks the day that your average Samsung Galaxy S6 or LG G4 users can grab the suite from the Google Play Store. Like the version of Office that was earlier released for Android tablets, mobile versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are available separately to download. The entire suite is available for free,... Read more...
You might think that given the reaction consumers had after Lenovo was found to be installing malware on customer PCs, other vendors would think twice about doing the exact same thing. Not Samsung, it seems, as it's just been discovered that the software updater tool it bundles with its notebooks takes it upon itself to keep Windows Update disabled. Windows Update is perhaps the most important tool that ships with Windows, as it's directly responsible for patching bugs directly related to the OS -- and there are a lot of them. If these bugs don't get patched, it means that the user is left vulnerable,... Read more...
Windows XP enjoyed a nice, long run, but after over a decade of faithful service, Microsoft finally pulled the plug on the legacy operating system and discontinued support in April of last year. All but the most diehard fans have since moved on, though it's still installed on more desktops than Windows 8.1, and on almost as many as Windows 8.1 and Windows 8 combined. You can count the U.S. Navy's system among them. According to a contract page at the U.S. Department of Defense, the Navy opted to pay Microsoft over $9.1 million dollars to continue offering custom support services... Read more...

Earlier this month, Microsoft offered more details and availability information for its forthcoming Surface Hub system. With pre-orders starting July 1st, these 55-inch or 84-inch machines offer a new collaborative version of the Surface experience for businesses, scientists, education and perhaps even power user consumers. Last week, while visiting our friends at CDW in Chicago, (more on this in the days ahead, think logistics and tech inventory powerhouse), we got to spend some time downtown at Microsoft's Envisioning Center. Microsoft Technical Solutions Specialist, Mark Skoog showcased the... Read more...
