WiFi Deployments Expected To Rise 350% By 2015, Says Report

According to a study by Informa Telecoms & Media and the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA), WiFi deployments will shoot up 350% worldwide by 2015, making WiFi access all the more ubiquitous.

Titled “Global Developments In Public WiFi”, the report found that 58% of all operators recognize the importance of WiFi to their customers’ experience. More notably, 47% of mobile operators feel the same way.

It’s the mobile sector, interestingly enough, that is a huge driver of WiFi growth, as service providers look to offload mobile data demands--which are skyrocketing--onto WiFi hotspots. In fact, the study found that just over half (51%) of total device connections to operators’ WiFi networks are from smartphones and tablets. Predictably, a lot of the growth is from emerging markets, including China, India, and Brazil.

The next step is making the WiFi user experience as simple as possible while maintaining security, with the goal being to make connecting, authenticating, and billing as smooth as the mobile experience.
