WHDI Wireless Streaming Comes To Tablets, HDTVs And More In 2011

2011 is still poised to be a breakout year for tablets and small mobile PCs, particularly with AMD's Fusion platform being launched alongside Intel's Sandy Bridge CPUs. But there's still another category that might just explode this year: wireless HD streaming. For years, companies have been working to perfect transmission technologies that would allow 1080p content to be delivered from a source to a display without any wires, but the solutions thus far have been extremely expensive and usually proprietary. With so many conflicting protocols on the market, it's confusing for a consumer, and many products simply refuse to talk to one another wirelessly.

AMIMON has been in this business right from the start years ago, and their WHDI technology has done nothing but gain support.  This year, the support is coming in droves. Earlier in the year, AMIMON showcased a great many products from numerous vendors with WHDI technology built-in, and the kinds of products that were showcased has us very hopeful that one more wire will be officially cut in 2011. We looked at a pair of adapter kits from Asus and briteView, right here.  The company has also showcased wireless HDTVs, wireless tablets, wireless PC-to-TV transfers, 3D, and mobile-to-TV products. Haier, Hisense, TCL are among a number of CE manufacturers that demonstrated WHDI products at CES, and AMIMON's now touting over-the-air switching capabilities utilizing a WHDI transmitter hub with multiple source devices connected to seamlessly and lag free switch from source device to another from the HDTV.

We suspect that most of these demonstrated products will come to market in just a few months. The real question is will consumers leap at the chance to ditch their HDMI cable. Even Intel's Wireless Display has shown the ability to have lag and jitter in some situations, and until that's totally ironed out, we get the feeling that many people will simply continue to rely on cables. And furthermore, so long as you have to run a power cable to your TV, there will also be that one last cable to worry over. So when you have one, what's one more?
