Western Digital is stepping up its efforts in the prosumer NAS market with the introduction of the My Cloud EX2 Ultra series. The My Cloud EX2 Ultra is designed for prosumers and creative professionals alike, and offers an easy way to backup data, sync files across multiple computers and share files with others.

Western Digital has empowered the My Cloud EX2 Ultra with a Marvell ARMADA 385 1.3GHz dual-core processor that is paired with 1GB of DDR3 memory. This should help the My Cloud EX2 Ultra in multitasking operations and gives it enough grunt to serve as a Plex Media Server (I just wouldn’t call on it to handle transcoding operations). RAID 0, RAID 1, JBOD and spanning modes are supported (the NAS comes preconfigured in RAID 1 mode for enhanced data protection), and there are two USB 3.0 ports on the back of the device that allows you to further expand storage.

The My Cloud EX2 Ultra is available in a variety of configurations, including a diskless version which allows you to use whatever 3.5-inch hard drive that you choose. But, if you want a preconfigured system, you can get up to 12TB of disk capacity (via dual 6TB hard drives) to handle all of your computer backup or media needs.

"We know our My Cloud users, especially creative professionals, need comprehensive solutions as digital storage needs continue to soar as well as the need for ongoing streaming capability," said Jim Welsh, Execute VP for WD Branded Products. "With the My Cloud EX2 Ultra, creative professionals are able to combine high performance with multi-tasking optimization and data protection to create a NAS system that simplifies their workflow and provides peace-of-mind."
