Sony's SmartAR Demo Takes Augmented Reality To A New Level
Augmented reality has a long way to go before it's widely used in
mainstream homes, but it's already progressing to a point where
technology lovers are taking notice. The Nintendo 3DS makes great use of
AR, and clearly Sony doesn't want to be left behind in the race. The
company has recently revealed a new kind of AR, called SmartAR. In
typical augmented reality situations, you need a card or inanimate
object to then view something real. But in Sony's SmartAR demo, the
company uses "markerless" object recognition to focus on real-life
objects, making the interactions that much more genuine. There's no word
yet on when this system will be integrated into shipping products --
it's very much a prototype / show-off system for now -- but the video
below should be enough to get you hopeful for a near-term release.
