Someone Just Paid $130K For The Very First 20th Anniversary PS4

Depending on the neighborhood, $129,000 could buy you a nice house. But for a Japanese fellow looking to own a piece of gaming history, that's the sum he was willing to pay for a PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary console. The reason he paid the enormous sum versus the going rate of $1,500 to $2,000 on eBay is because this particular version is labeled No. 00001/12300.

Sony held a special auction for the first of a limited run of retro themed
PS4 consoles. There were only 12,300 of these consoles made, a number that represents the original PlayStation's December 3 (12/3) launch back in 1994. That made the run of 20th Anniversary edition consoles extremely limited, but apparently the first of the lot is worth exponentially more than the rest.

The pricey console sold in an auction hosted by Yahoo with a closing bid of 15,136,000 yen. It beat out 1,584 other bids, several of which were over 15 million yen - in other words, this particular console was destined to sell for an inflated sum. Even Sony was taken aback by how much it sold for.

"We appreciate all who participated in the auction and are surprised at the highest bid price, which was higher than our expectations," a Sony representative said.

Sony has sold over 18.5 million PS4 consoles to date, making the latest generation system the fastest selling PlayStation console ever.
