Samsung Galaxy Unpacked Event Set For February 21st With Galaxy S7 And Gear VR Focus

The pressure is on Samsung's recently anointed mobile boss D.J. Koh to spark a flurry of Galaxy smartphone sales with its next smartphone launch, and just as importantly, be prepared for the demand that follows. He'll get his chance on February 21, 2016, the day Samsung's planning to host its next annual Unpacked event.

Samsung tipped in the date in a teaser video that begins with a shot of its Gear VR headset. The video quickly transitions to a blue box over which the hashtag #TheNextGalaxy appears, followed by the aforementioned date, which incidentally happens to be the day before Mobile World Congress in Barcelona kicks off.

While not official, we can reasonably presume that the next Galaxy handsets from Samsung will be the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, plus a spattering of lower end and specialized versions like the Active. What can you expect?

Based on previous rumors and leaked info, the Galaxy S7 is expected to wield a 5.1-inch or 5.2-inch Super AMOLED display with a 2560x1440 resolution, while the Galaxy S7 Edge will be slightly larger at 5.5 inches. Both will sport top-of-the-end hardware—Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC, 4GB of RAM, 32GB or 64GB of storage—and perhaps some new additions, like the return of the microSD card slot and a pressure-sensitive display.

There's also been chatter of Samsung launching a Galaxy S7 smartphone upgrade program. Similar to Apple's upgrade program, Samsung's program would allow customers to upgrade to a new model handset every year in exchange for a monthly fee.
