Research In Motion Blows Past Three Billion BlackBerry App Downloads
Research In Motion (RIM) has its fair share of problems to sort out, including poor financial results and strategic woes in competing with the likes of Android and iOS, but when it comes to small victories, RIM can take solace in the fact that it's starting to put up big app download numbers. As in, three billion and counting, according to RIM's BlackBerry Developer blog.
"Three billion app downloads averages out to over 2.5 million downloads each day. What’s even more important – and impressive – is that the number of daily downloads continues to increase," RIM explains. "It took 786 days to reach the one billion mark, 210 days to reach two billion, and only 176 days to reach the three billion number."
Not too shabby. It's worth noting that these figures only represent download stats from BlackBerry App World, and don't include apps downloaded from anywhere else, such as third party app stores, direct from Web downloads, and apps pushed internally within business organizations.
Still, it's small potatoes compared to the competition. Apple's App Store surpassed 25 billion downloads earlier this year, while Google announced in December 2011 that its Android Market (now known as Google Play) topped 10 billion downloads.
