New iTunes Version Blocks the Pre

It was expected, and here it is. Apple has updated iTunes to 8.2.1 and by doing so, has blocked the ability of the Palm Pre to use iTunes. One of the release notes with regards to the app states:
iTunes 8.2.1 provides a number of important bug fixes and addresses an issue with verification of Apple Devices.
None of this is surprising. One has to wonder what Apple did to block the Palm Pre, as it appeared that Palm was using the hardware ID of an iPod.

In June, Apple warned that the Pre's spoofing wouldn't work for long:
"Apple designs the hardware and software to provide seamless integration of the iPhone and iPod with iTunes, the iTunes Store, and tens of thousands of apps on the App Store. Apple is aware that some third-parties claim that their digital media players are able to sync with Apple software. However, Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players."
For Pre users, the workaround is simple: don't use the new version of iTunes. That's a workaround; we'll have to see if Palm can come up with a fix, and then the battle will continue.
