New iPad Sales Surpassed 3 Million Last Weekend, Apple Says

Apple this week announced it sold more than three million new iPad devices since its launch on Friday, March 16 through Monday, March 19, an impressive figure that proves there's still a rabid fan base for these things. The new iPad's big new feature is its Retina display, one of the main points of emphasis along with adding support for 4G LTE. Apple also touted the new A5X processor, which is still a 1GHz dual-core CPU but with quad-core graphics, and improved 5MP "iSight" (rear-facing) camera.

"The new iPad is a blockbuster with three million sold?the strongest iPad launch yet," said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. "Customers are loving the incredible new features of iPad, including the stunning Retina display, and we can't wait to get it into the hands of even more customers around the world this Friday."

Apple launched the iPad in several territories around the world, including the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Switzerland, U.K., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Cupertino company will add 24 more countries to the list on Friday, March 23.

The new iPad maintains the same launch price as the iPad 2 and iPad 2, starting at $499 (16GB, Wi-Fi) and going up to $829 (64GB, Wi-Fi + 4G).
