MSI Drops Mobile GeForce GTX 10-Series Hammer With VR-Ready Gaming Notebooks
The folks at NVIDIA have gone and done a bad thing. By building mobile versions of Pascal, they've went and rendered all of us with a previous generation gaming laptop suddenly feeling inadequate with our hardware and wanting for an upgrade. Seriously, check out these benchmarks we ran. The good news is notebook makers are starting to roll out laptops based on NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 10 series GPU, including MSI, which is excited as we are about Pascal.
MSI has stacked its lineup with an assortment of models ranging in price from $1,599 all the way up to $5,099. There are too many models to cover in detail, so let's have a look at the top and bottom units.
At the $1,599 price point sits the GS43VR Phantom Pro. It's a 14-inch laptop with a Full HD 1080p (1920x1080) "IPS Level" display. It's powered by an Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor, 16GB of DDR4-2133 RAM, and GeForce GTX 1060 graphics with 6GB of onboard GDDR5 memory.
Storage is handled by a 128GB M.2 SATA SSD and a 1TB HDD. Other features include two SuperPort + USB 3.0 ports, SteelSeries backlit keyboard (red), two speakers, Full HD webcam, and Windows 10 64-bit. All that comes crammed into a package measuring 13.58 x 9.65 x 0.87 inches and weighing just 3.75 pounds.
All the way on the other end of the spectrum is the $5,099 GT83VR Titan SLI. This thing is a beast with an 18.4-inch Full HD 1080p (1920x1080) WideView IPS-Level display powered by an Intel Core i7-6920HQ processor, 64GB of DDR4-2133 RAM, and dual GeForce GTX 1080 GPUs with a combined 16GB of GDDR5X memory.
Don't bother wiping up your drool just yet. Storage chores are handled by a Super RAID 4 setup consisting of two 512GB PCIe SSDs and a 1TB HDD. You'll also find Killer Gaming Network's E2400 + Bluetooth 4.1 connectivity, Thunderbolt 3, five USB 3.0 ports, Full HD webcam, SteelSeries keyboard with red backlight and Cherry MX Brown key switches, four Dynaudio Tech speakers plus a subwoofer, and Windows 10 64-bit. NOW you can wipe up your drool.
This one's considerably bigger and heavier than the GS43VR Phantom Pro, measuring 16.85 x 12.36 x 1.66-2.52 inches and weighing a hefty 10.36 pounds.
If neither of these models fits the bill, don't fret, there are plenty of other options with various size displays, including a few 4K resolution models starting at $2,099. Some of the other models also sport USB Type C connectivity, such as the GT72VR Tobii and GT72VR Dominator Pro, both of which also wield half a dozen USB 3.0 ports.
