Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta Now Available For Free

How do you top the release of Windows 10, the last version of Windows ever, which by the way Microsoft is giving away for free to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users? Quite frankly, you don't, though there's another freebie that ties into that. If you already own Minecraft for PC or Mac -- and 20 million of you do -- then you can get the new version for Windows 10 at no cost.

Called Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta, the new edition of Minecraft that was announced at Minecon 2015 a few weeks ago is now rolling out. To grab your copy, just log into your Mojang account and click the "Redeem" button on your account page. From there, sign into your Microsoft account and follow the instructions. Easy, right?

Sure, as long as it appears in your account. If not, don't strip naked and run down the street in a panic. For one, who does that anyway? But more importantly, Microsoft says the beta is still rolling out. If you don't see the button on your account page, just be patient, cross you fingers, and check back later.

If you don't own Minecraft for PC or Mac, the Windows 10 edition will be available in the Windows 10 Store at a discounted rate of $9.99 for a limited time. Microsoft hasn't said how long the promotional price will be in effect, so if you're interested, don't procrastinate.

It's a work in progress and doesn't currently include multiplayer. However, there will be free updates along the way, and multiplayer is one of the things Microsoft said it will add "soon after launch."
