June Game Sales Plummet Nearly a Third in U.S., NPD Group Says
Interestingly, game accessory sales climbed by 4 percent to $169.8 million. It was the only category to see an increase.
NPD's figures don't tell the whole story, as they only include figures for new physical hardware, software, and accessories. The numbers completely ignore digital sales, as well as used game sales and rentals. If you were to crunch the numbers from all those categories, NPD industry analyst Anita Frazier says the new tally comes to $1.36 billion in June.
Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes was the best selling game in the U.S. in June, according to NPD Group.
"Our final assessment of the consumer spend on these areas outside of new physical retail sales will be reported in September in our Q2 Games Market Dynamics: U.S. report," Frazier said.
Also notable is the fact that Nintendo 3DS handheld console sales topped 5 million units in the U.S., NPD says. That's after tallying 155,000 3DS sales in the month of June, compared to 90,000 Wii consoles and 257,000 Xbox 360 consoles.
