Jabra Introduces The First Touchscreen Headsets
Just when we thought every device capable of a touch interface already had one, Jabra came out with its newest wireless headsets. Jabra proclaims them to be the first to have touchscreens and we don't doubt it.
There is a catch, however. These headsets don't work with any old phone. They are designed for use with business class IP PBX systems, specific SIP-based desktop handsets (like those made by Cisco, Siemens or those certified to work with Microsoft's new IP PBX, Lync), as well as specific softphones (from said IP PBX vendors). They also only work with selected mobile phones.
But those that are using these highly popular voice-over-IP systems, can use the touchscreens to easily switch headset connectivity between phones and look sleek while doing it. The touchscreen also offers some call handling functions like starting or ending calls and volume control.
The Jabra PRO 9400 is a family of four wireless headsets that vary in the number of phones they can simultaneously connect (two or three), mono or dual speakers, their range of operation (up to 450 feet) and how many ways a user can wear them (headband, neckband, earhook), among other details. These use DECT 6.0 and operate in the 1.9Ghz band. They will set you back $280 - $310.
The Jabra GO 6400 Series is the Bluetooth option and as such they have a shorter range -- about 300 feet for the desk handset or softphone and 300-feet from your mobile phone. Here's a list of mobile phones certified to work with them. You'll notice BlackBerry, Nokia and Android options on the list, but alas, no iPhone. Bummer. The various headsets in the 6400 series sell for about $280.
Between the two families, Jabra is offering six touchscreen headsets all told. You'll have to decide if their ooh-ahh cool factor is worth the executive price tag.
