iSuppli: Android is the "Secret Sauce" in Smartphone's Recipe for Success

Handset makers take note. If you want to cook up quarterly profits, the recipe is easy: Stock up on Google's not so "secret sauce" (as iSuppli calls it) Android platform and serve hot. According to iSuppli, this is exactly what's been working, and out of the Top 10 smartphone brands in the second quarter, the majority were rocking Google's delicious open-source OS.

"Every brand that has put effort into designing smart phones using Google’s mobile operating system is riding the Android wave," said Tina Teng, senior analyst for wireless communications at iSuppli. "From the spectacular growth of HTC and Samsung, to the steady advances of Motorola, Android is the secret sauce for smart phone growth for many companies in 2010."

Not surprisingly, HTC took center stage. The handset maker bumped its market share from 5.3 percent in Q1 2010 to 8 percent in Q2. Even more impressive, HTC's Q2 2010 sequential growth skyrocketed to 63.1 percent, more than any other smartphone maker on the planet. Apple, meanwhile, slid 4 percent in sequential growth.

"Among the fastest-growing smart phone brands, the only one that cannot credit its success in the second quarter to Android was Sharp, which enjoyed the third fastest growth of 48.7 percent," iSuppli noted. "Sharp only recently threw its hat into the Android arena in the fourth quarter; its advance in the second quarter was due to the company gaining market share in Japan."
