Microsoft HoloLens Development Edition Priced At $3,000, Ships March 30th

Attention all developers, Microsoft is now accepting applications to pre-order the Development Edition of its HoloLens augmented reality (AR) Windows 10 headset. Those who've already submitted an application will begin receiving invitations to purchase the $3,000 headset, which will begin shipping on March 30, 2016.

"Today represents a monumental step forward. This is the first step in our journey to consumers. A step focused on our commercial partnerships and on supporting developers, who will help pave the way to consumer availability with amazing and new holographic experiences," Microsoft stated in a blog post.

Microsoft has a handful of guides and detailed tutorials to help developers get started, Additional tools that include Visual Studio projects and a HoloLens emulator will ship to customers at the same time as the headset. Developers will be able to use the emulator to test their holographic apps on a PC without a physical HoloLens, and it will also come with a HoloLens development toolset, in case developers want to get a jump on things.

HoloLens is different from the various high profile virtual solutions out there, like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. It's the only device that enables holographic computing natively with no markers, no external cameras, no wires, no phone, and no connection to a PC needed.

Microsoft's headset has see-through holographic lenses that use and advanced optical projection system to generate multi-dimensional full-color holograms with low latency. These are then plastered into your real-world environment—your tabletop could be transformed into a virtual battlefield.

To be eligible for the Development Edition pre-order, you must be a Windows Insider living in the U.S. or Canada and agree to provide feedback.
