hField Technologies Wi-Fire Adapter Boosts Wi-Fi Range
Got issues getting a signal? Don't mind strapping some extra hardware on your notebook in order to make things better? If not, then give hField Technologies' a look, which has just issued a new long-range Wi-Fi adapter that can supposedly help users maintain a wireless signal from up to 1000 feet away from the router. In case you're wondering, that's around three times the range of other 802.11 adapters.
The third-generation Wi-Fire adapter (model number HFWFG200) is 40% smaller and 30% lighter than its predecessor, and unlike the original, this one also works with Macs. In fact, the adapter can enhance Wi-Fi signals on Windows, Linux and OS X computers, though speed demons will surely lament the fact that it doesn't support 802.11n (it tops out at 802.11b/g). The 2.8 oz. device is highly portable and can clip onto one's notebook LCD, and at $59, it's a pretty good bargain if you're tired of dropped connections and hanging on a single bar.

This new hardware release also features hField's new Wi-Fire Connection Manager 2.2 (WCM2.2) for Windows, which has much smaller memory requirements for XP and Vista than any other adapter on the market, as well as the WCM 1.1 for Mac. The Wi-Fire is plug-and-play for most popular Linux distributions with the Wi-Fire driver and network support built-in to kernel distributions from 2.6.24 and forward.
