HBO Now Arrives On Amazon Fire TV And Fire TV Stick, Fire TV Refresh Likely Imminent

Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick have gotten a whole lot more interesting in just the past week. Both streaming devices, which first and foremost are a showcase for Amazon’s Instant Video platform, are worthy competitors to the likes of the Roku 3, Apple TV, and Google Chromecast. Speaking of that last competitor, an $8 app popped up in the Amazon Appstore that effectively turns both the Fire TV and Fire TV stick into a Chromecast device.

Today, however, Amazon’s streaming devices are getting some assistance from a more “legitimate” source: HBO. The standalone HBO Now service, which last month arrived on Amazon’s Fire tablets (Apple had a brief exclusivity window before the service landed on competing platforms), is available for both the Fire TV and Fire TV Stick.

With HBO Now, subscribers pay just $14.99 per month to gain access to not only HBO’s current programming — like the megahit Game of Thrones — but also the entire back catalog of HBO programming (TV shows and movies) courtesy of on-demand access.

Customers can signup for HBO Now by visiting hbonow.com and enjoy a free 30-day trial of the service. But chances are, you’ll likely become hooked after the trial period expires and continue forking over $14.99 to go along with your Netflix subscription and whatever other cord cutter packaged you may have been sucked into.

Speaking of the Fire TV, the $99.99 model is currently out of stock on Amazon’s website. Amazon lists the device as “currently unavailable” and notes that it doesn’t know when the item will be back in stock. Considering that the the device was first introduced in April 2014, it’s about time for a refresh which could explain why it’s MIA. Apple is rumored to be launching an all-new Apple TV next month, so this could be an opportune time for Amazon to come out hitting hard with a powerful streaming alternative.

The $39.99 Fire TV Stick, however, is still available to purchase.
