Halo Goes Mobile, 'Spartan Assault' to Debut on Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8

It was probably only a matter of time before a Halo game made it to touch devices, and here it is with “Halo: Spartan Assault”. Microsoft and 343 Industries announced the new title, which will be available in July for the low, low price of $6.99. Only those with Windows 8 or Windows Phone 8 devices will get to play.

“With ‘Halo: Spartan Assault,’ we wanted to take ‘Halo’ out of the living room and create a brand new experience that was built specifically for a different screen,” said Dan Ayoub, the game’s Executive Producer. “This is an opportunity for us to define what makes ‘Halo’ unique on mobile platforms and really raise the bar for what is possible.”

In the new title, you can play as Commander Sarah Palmer or as Spartan Davis over 25 levels set between Halo 3 and Halo 4. It’s optimized for touch devices, but you can also connect a mouse and keyboard and play that way, too.

And although the sounds, weapons, vehicles, enemies, and settings may feel familiar, this isn’t a first-person shooter; instead, it’s a top-down shooter, which kind of takes the wind out of the game’s sails a bit.

Still, if you’re a fan of the franchise, you could do worse than having a smooth-looking Halo game in the palm of your hand.
