GameStop Restarts Trade-In Program For Your Treasured Retro Games And Consoles
You know what they say about one man's trash being another man's treasure, and if you're sitting on a collection of old school game consoles that you want to get rid of, GameStop will soon accept them as trade-ins. The pilot program will kick off in two of GameStop's markets, New York City and Birmingham, which include around 250 store locations.
Beginning April 25, 2015, GameStop stores in those markets will accept retro game consoles, games, and select accessories for systems dating back to the original Nintendo Entertainment System. That means you'll be able to trade-in and/or purchase systems and accessories that include the NES, Super NES, Sega Genesis, PlayStation, Nintendo 64, and one of my favorites, Sega Dreamcast. No mention of the TurboGrafix 16, a console that fits within that era but was largely overshadowed by the Genesis.
GameStop told IGN that systems and accessories traded in will go through its Refurbishment Operations Center where they'll be inspected, tested, and repaired as necessary. There will be about a two month lead time from when systems are traded in and when they land on store shelves for sale, which will give GameStop plenty of "time to build up a good assortment for retro games fans to select from when shopping."
Don't expect to be flooded with memories when you walk into a participating GameStop store. The focus will still be on modern generation systems and accessories, while the retro units will be available on GameStop's website and through its web-in-store system.
It's not clear how much these dated consoles will cost or how much they're carry in trade-in value. However, GameStop did say they'll be backed by the same warranty that applies to current generation used and refurbished consoles.
