Dwindling MacBook Air Inventory Hints at Retina-Class Refresh

A telltale sign that Apple is about to refresh a product category is when inventory of the current crop of products starts disappearing. So it is with Apple's 13-inch MacBook Air model, the popular lightweight notebook that's out of stock at several major retailers, including Amazon, B&H, MacMall, and J&R's online site.

Some of the sites list that it's a temporary shortage, but it may not be a coincidence that the low inventory comes just ahead of Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), an annual event that's due to run from June 10-14. If Apple is planning to refresh its MacBook Air line, WWDC would be a good place and time to do it.

MacBook Air

Current generation MacBook Air models range in price from $999 to $1,399. There are two sizes available, one with an 11.6-inch LED backlit display and the other with a 13.3-inch panel. Neither one boasts a Retina-class resolution, as the 11.6-inch features a 1366x768 panel and the 13.3-inch version uses a 1440x900 display.

Apple could choose to carry both Retina-class and non Retina-class display models of the MacBook Air like it does with its MacBook Pro lines, attaching a pricing premium to the ones with a higher-quality panel.
