CyanogenMod Supports Samsung Galaxy S III Ahead of U.S. Launch
Well here's an exciting bit of news for the modding community. Famed Android modder Steve "Cyanogen" Kondik has made available a build of his aftermarket CyanogenMod firmware for Samsung's Galaxy S III smartphone, which has yet to ship in the United States. How so?
For starters, the Galaxy S III has been available in other parts of the world for about the past three weeks. It's also worth mentioning that Kondik now works for Samsung as a software developer, so there's a good chance he got his hands on a Galaxy S III before everyone else.
In any event, the firmware is available as a nightly build over on the XDA Developers forums. Some of the features included are lockscreen gestures, incognito browsing mode, OpenVPN, a DSP equalizer, and themes support, to name a few. There are also some known issues, such as the FM radio not working, wonkiness using the camera's LED flash (could cause an annoying force close), and waking up the device using volume keys may not work properly.
AT&T and T-Mobile plan to ship the Galaxy S III on June 21. Verizon will offer the smartphone on July 10, and U.S. Cellular is stating mid to late July.
