Apple’s App Store Generated A Record $10B For Developers In 2014
It was a record breaking year for Apple app developers, who collectively pocketed more than $10 billion in revenue in 2014, helped in part by a 50 percent rise in billings. Riding on that momentum, Apple today announced that the first week of January set a new record for billings as well, with customers around the globe spending almost $500 million on apps and in-app purchases.
For whatever reason, New Year's Day 2015 proved especially popular for app purchases -- customers set a single day record in App Store sales history, though Apple stopped short of attaching any numbers to the record breaking day.
"This year is off to a tremendous start after a record-breaking year for the App Store and our developer community," said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. "We're so proud of the creativity and innovation developers bring to the apps they create for iOS users and that the developer community has now earned over $25 billion."
All those sales also had an impact on charity too. During the holiday season, App Store customers made history with their support of Apps for (RED), an initiative with exclusive content where all proceeds went to the Global Fund to fight AIDS. Apple said it donated a record-shattering $20 million this quarter, and over $100 million in all since partnering with (RED).
The App Store has grown to 1.4 millions since it was introduced in 2008, over 725,000 of which are for the iPad. And with an industry built around app design and development, Apple claims that its iOS ecosystem has helped create 627,000 jobs in the U.S. alone.
