AMD Announces Windows 8 PC Designs with Microsoft
With the launch of Windows 8 to the general public taking place to today, you can expect to see an avalanche of product releases and announcements in the coming weeks and months. In the thick of it all is Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), which announced it's been collaborating with Microsoft for more than 125 Windows 8-based PC designs from big-name OEMs like Asus, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, and more.
"There is a lot of exciting innovation happening in the marketplace today – from the new Windows 8 graphics-accelerated user interface and apps, to ultraportable and sleek hardware designs – and AMD’s CPU, GPU and APU technology designed for Windows 8 helps enable a no-compromise solution," said Stefan Kinnestrand, director of Product Management, Windows Division at Microsoft.
Windows 8 represents a new era of computing, and if there's one company that understands the need for a fresh start, it's AMD. The Sunnyvale chip designer has been going through some rough financial times that will ultimately see the elimination of 15 percent of its workforce.

"The PC industry is going through a period of very significant change that is impacting both the ecosystem and AMD," said Rory Read, AMD president and CEO. "It is clear that the trends we knew would re-shape the industry are happening at a much faster pace than we anticipated. As a result, we must accelerate our strategic initiatives to position AMD to take advantage of these shifts and put in place a lower cost business model. Our restructuring efforts are designed to simplify our product development cycles, reduce our breakeven point and enable us to fund differentiated product roadmaps and strategic breakaway opportunities."
Windows 8 isn't just a re-imagining of the Windows platform, it also represents a mulligan of sorts for AMD as it transitions to an era of touch computing, both on the desktop and in mobile. Playing an important roll in that strategy is AMD's Z-60 APU (Accelerated Processing Unit), which is designed primarily for tablet applications.
