Sony Bringing PlayStation To China

China is a curious market for game consoles, but Sony is about to dive in and try to make its bones in the populous country by selling its PlayStation there. According to the New York Times, Sony and Shanghai Oriental Pearl Group are setting up two ventures to sell Sony’s hardware and software, respectively, in China.

The NYT noted that consoles have been banned in mainland China since 2000, but the country lifted the ban in January. As a result, although there’s a certain amount of piracy of consoles, many Chinese gamers prefer PC and mobile games.

Obviously, Sony is hoping to change that, and it’s not hard to imagine that gamers could be swayed by a sudden surge of (legal) consoles. Microsoft is hoping the same, as the company and its partner BesTV New Media are reportedly bringing the Xbox to China in September.
