Microsoft Bumps Up Processor In Surface Pro 2 But Tells No One

In Microsoft’s second generation of Surface tablets, the generational updates are a definite improvement on the original as we clearly found in our Surface 2 review, and the Surface Pro 2 shipped with an impressive Intel Core i5-4200U (1.6GHz) processor.

However, there are new Surface Pro 2s popping up that have a slightly better processor--the Intel Core i5-4300U (1.9GHz). Yet Microsoft didn’t tell anyone that it was putting the slightly better chips in the Surface Pro 2.

The bump in specs first came to light when a user swapped out his defective Surface Pro 2 and noticed that the replacement tablet had the different processor. In response to his post in the Microsoft forums, the company simply replied, “Microsoft routinely makes small changes to internal components over the lifetime of a product, based on numerous factors including supply chain partnerships, availability, and value for our customers. With any change to hardware or software, we work to ensure that the product experience remains excellent.”

It appears as though Surface Pro 2s that are shipping now enjoy the new specs, so if you were thinking of snapping one up, good on you for waiting.
