Late last week, a teaser trailer for Street Fighter 5 found its way onto the Internet. One curious takeaway from the trailer was the game would be an exclusive for the PlayStation 4 on consoles (it’s also coming to the PC). Fighting fans that also happen to be Xbox One owners were clearly dismayed with the exclusivity agreement, so fans naturally took to Twitter to get some answers from Phil Spencer, Microsoft’s Xbox Division Head. When questioned about the Street Fighter 5 snub, Spencer responded honestly, stating, “Business deals happen. We won't do all of them. When we have a 1st party... Read more...
Back in March we posted an article about GTA V and said that one of these days we’d post a piece stating that the title is finally available for the PC. Well, today is that day. Rockstar posted the news that Grand Theft Auto V is indeed coming to the PC, this fall. It’s also going to be available on Microsoft’s and Sony’s next-gen Xbox One and PS4 consoles. “Grand Theft Auto V will take full advantage of the power of the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC with across-the-board graphical and technical improvements to deliver a stunning new level of detail,” reads... Among places to not feel safe, the foothills of the Himalayas, in a bus with a monkey, at a checkpoint manned by rifle-wielding militiamen, with a psycho in a helicopter coming in for a landing, would be close to the top of the list. Yet that is exactly where we find ourselves in the 5-minute trailer for Far Cry 4, a game that takes place in the wild environs of the mountains. Ubisoft unveiled the trailer at E3, and it’s captivating. And brutal. Do yourself a favor and check it out. (Warning: NSFW. Mountain despots tend to use strong language.) If that doesn’t get your blood pumping,... Read more...
Twitch is a popular platform for watching and sharing video game footage, seeing top-notch players broadcasting their thing, enjoying special events, and more--and now it’s the property of Google, via YouTube. According to Variety, YouTube acquired Twitch for a cool billion dollars. The deal is reportedly an all-cash offer and will be announced shortly. Twitch says that it has over 45 million visitors per month. It was just in February that Microsoft announced that it would finally add Twitch livestreaming to the Xbox One, which we pontificated would bring about new features. We were partially... It turns out the scuttlebutt from back in March is true: Ubisoft announced that Far Cry 4 is coming this November for consoles and PCs. It will be out on November 18th in the U.S. and November 20th in EMEA, and it will be available on the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Windows PCs. “Pack away your tropical gear, because Far Cry 4 is heading to the Himalayas,” wrote Ubisoft’s Gary Steinman in a blog post. “Taking a sharp turn away from the lush island jungles of the top-rated Far Cry 3, Far Cry 4 is set in Kyrat, an untamed region currently ruled by a despotic self-appointed... Comparatively, the numbers don’t look great for Microsoft: The company has sold 5 million Xbox One consoles so far--which by itself seems a fine number--but competitor Sony has sold 7 million PS4s. That’s quite a margin of difference, although there’s are some nuances to consider, too. According to Geekwire, the PS4 is available in some 72 countries, while the Xbox One is in just 13 markets. Looked at that way, it’s possible that the Xbox One may actually be selling better in certain markets. (It’s impossible to tell, though, because those specific numbers aren’t... Read more...
If you’ve been digging Titanfall but have exhausted all the maps, here’s some good news for you: The game is getting three new maps with the "Expedition" DLC next month. Oddly, it seems like it’s been a while since the Ouya Android gaming console felt truly compelling after a whirlwind Kickstarter honeymoon, fundraising explosion, and emergence of the device as a Real Thing, but the company is trying to change that with its “Ouya Everywhere” initiative. Basically, Ouya Everywhere is a way to embed the Ouya platform into other devices. It makes sense to do so, considering that Ouya has hundreds of titles now and could use any exposure it can get wherever it can get it. Mad Catz M.O.J.O. The first Ouya Everywhere partner is Mad Catz, which has its... Read more...
For months on end, the Xbox 360 outsold every other major game console on store shelves. But then, the next-generation war began, pitting the Xbox One against the PlayStation 4 and the WiiU. My, how the tables have turned. The NPD Group's latest research report shows that in January 2014, the PS4 outsold the Xbox One, and by a health 2-to-1 margin. A Sony spokesperson stated that demand has remained "incredibly strong" for the PS4 console, even after the holidays, making it the number one next-gen console to kick off 2014. Not surprisingly, he was quite proud to "nearly double" the sales of the... Read more...
AMD has released its annual earnings report, and the news for the chipmaker is mixed but looking up. For the year, AMD saw revenue drop 2% from 2012 (from $5.42 billion to $5.3 billion), but the company had a solid fourth quarter in 2013 with $1.59 billion revenue which marked a 38% year-over-year jump from 2012. Much of that revenue came from sales of Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PlayStation 4. (Lest anyone forget that both of those very popular consoles run on AMD semi-custom hardware, that was a big win for the company.) AMD says that altogether, the Microsoft and Sony sold 7... When December starts winding down, Google offers up a roundup of the year’s top search terms in its Year-End Zeitgeist report. It’s an annual look at the people, events, and humorous miscellany that captured the world’s attention. Topping the list this year was Nelson Mandela, the former President of South Africa and global beacon of strength and peace who passed away recently. The Boston Marathon tragedy was #6, and the mysterious North Korea, always a baffling and intriguing topic for Westerners, slid in at #10. The deaths of celebrities Paul Walker (#2) and Cory Monteith (#4)... Read more...
Microsoft has made no secret of the fact that it wants the Xbox One to be the center of your home entertainment universe, and to that end the company is always looking for more features to keep users engaged. Last year, word broke that Microsoft was going to be developing original content for the Xbox platform, but until now not much has been happening on that front besides a cursory mention of an original Steven Spielberg-produced live-action Halo series at the Xbox One launch event. However, that promised content will be coming soon. “We’re hoping we will be able to put something... Read more...
The good news is that Bungie’s eagerly anticipated Destiny finally has a release date. The bad news is that date is September 9th, 2014, which is several long months away. The Destiny Beta will kick off this summer, so those involved on that front won’t have to wait as long to dive in, but that still may be disappointing news for some--it was previously thought that the beta would launch sometime in Q1 2014. As we noted earlier, the beta will launch first for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, offering a tasty early selling point for Sony’s consoles over Microsoft’s. The... Read more...
