I'm looking out my window and see snow. Lots of it. At this point, summer seems a million years away and I have no desire to go out in the cold to make a snow angel or do whatever it is people do in freezing weather these days. So I'll sit inside and catch up on some gaming, especially if the deals keep rolling in. Last week is an awesome collection of Star Wars titles that Humble Bundle was serving up, and now they've put together a tantalizing Square Enix bundle! You know the drill -- pay what you want for a core collection of games, and at least a paltry dollar to receive Steam keys. Pay more... Read more...
AMD is holding an event / demo in Montreal today, offering to let anyone who likes come in, check out 4K gaming on their upcoming graphics card, and promising that the GPU will deliver performance over and above anything Nvidia's GTX 780 can offer. 4K gaming has increasingly become popular -- or at least, discussed, as monitors begin to debut at that resolution and modifications to the Blu-ray standard are floated. AMD has run two tests, which it claims demonstrates this performance -- BioShock Infinite and Tomb Raider. There are two caveats I want to mention, one for each game. For the BioShock... Read more...
AMD has confirmed that Battlefield 4 will be part of its upcoming "Never Settle" bundle. The game isn't supposed to drop until late 2013, which means AMD is announcing a coupon package well in advance of the actual title. This isn't the first time a manufacturer has taken this step, but it's been quite awhile -- the last major tie-in we remember this far in advance was an offer for Valve's Orange and Black Boxes that shipped back in the 2004 time frame. It's not surprising to see EA and AMD teaming up, since BF4 was demoed on Team Red hardware about ten days back, but the "Never Settle" program... Read more...
I was going to write a review of the new Tomb Raider, talk about AMD's Tress FX system, and discuss the game's merits. Not anymore. Not only is the game utterly destroyed by a reliance on Quick Time Events at every single juncture, the developers decided early on to refuse to tell you which buttons you actually need to push to complete them successfully. This original screenshot from Kotaku illustrates the problem nicely. First, you have to hit the "Left" and "Right" keys in quick succession. Then you have to press a button. Which button? I don't know. And when I say "I don't know," I'm not kidding. This... Read more...
The last Tomb Raider movie -- Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life -- grossed just $67 million domestically and $157 million worldwide when it debuted in 2003. Those kind of figures don't inspire subsequent attempts to capitalize on a franchise, but with Tomb Raider recently getting a reboot, Hollywood may once again give Lara Croft a shot on the silver screen. According to a report in Variety, Crystal Dynamics is working closely with GK Films on another Tomb Raider movie, a rare move when game makers typically just hand off film licensing rights and hope for the best. GK Films, by the way,... Read more...
Brace yourself for a new Tomb Raider game. After a long hiatus courtesy of developer delays and other bumps in the road, Lara Croft appears ready to once again challenge gamers as the franchise gets a reboot. To help spark excitement among fans of the series, as well as those who perhaps have never played a Tomb Raider title, a teaser trailer has been released ahead of next week's E3 2012 exposition. The trailer, shown above, is less than a half a minute long and shows "the first shots of gameplay from the upcoming Tomb Raider!," according to the video's description. Originally scheduled to land... Read more...
