Microsoft’s Surface 2 Windows RT tablet was unceremoniously put to death earlier this year. The demise of the Surface 2 wasn’t a shock to industry watchers; various OEMs provided more compelling tablet solutions running x86 processors that were able to access the vast Windows software library (the Windows RT-based, ARM-powered Surface 2 was shutout from traditional Windows applications).Microsoft Surface 2 According to a new report from Winbeta, Microsoft won’t make that same mistake again when it launches a new tablet to slot under the Surface Pro 3 (or the inevitable Surface Pro 4). The fanless... Read more...
The sly folks at Microsoft decided to snip $100 off the price of its Surface 2 tablets, bringing down the cost of entry to the Windows 8.1 RT tablet to $349 for the 32GB model. If you need more storage, the 64GB version is now priced at $449, and the 64GB with 4G LTE (on AT&T) baked in now goes for $579. What's most interesting about these price cuts is the timing. Microsoft is scheduled to host a press event on September 30 in which it's rumored the Redmond company will introduce Windows 9 (codenamed Threshold), followed by the availability of a Release Preview around the same time. There's... Read more...
The numbers have yet to be revealed, but it looks as if the holiday season will end up being a good one for many technology companies. With two fresh consoles on the market, plenty of new wearables, new iPads from Apple, and new Surface tablets from Microsoft, Santa had plenty to choose from. But, if you're looking to spend a little of that stocking-stuffed cash on a new slate post-Christmas, you may have a bit of a tough time locating one of Microsoft's latest. Shortly after hearing that Chromebook uptake has been on the rise, largely at the expense of Microsoft, it appears that the Surface 2... Read more...

Nokia's recently announced Lumia 2520 tablet is drawing high praise from Qualcomm, the company who's Snapdragon 800 processor is powering the device. There's nothing unusual about that -- Qualcomm has a vested interest in the Lumia 2520's success -- but what's interesting is that the praise is coming at the expense of Microsoft's Surface 2 slate. Though the Lumia 2520 and Surface 2 look very similar to each other and both are running ARM-based processors, Qualcomm is only powering one of the them. Microsoft opted to go with NVIDIA's Tegra 4 platform for Surface 2, and as far as Qualcomm is concerned,... Read more...
Microsoft's Surface 2 became available for purchase at retail earlier this week and we've had an eval unit in-hand for testing since the day before launch. Powered by NVIDIA's new quad-core Tegra 4 SoC, and driven by Windows 8.1 RT, the Surface 2 offers stiff competition to the recently announced iPad Air. From a total package perspective, Microsoft throws in a 200GB of SkyDrive cloud storage, free Skype landline calling for 2 years and 1 year of all you can eat Skype WiFi at available hot spots. So you get all that, for $150 less (comparable 32GB Surface 2 pricing at $449) than an iPad Air at... Read more...
If you're rooting for Microsoft to succeed (and really, why wouldn't you?), then keep your fingers crossed that its mobile strategy is starting to work. That's what the Redmond outfit would have you believe, hence a call out to developers to get on the ball building apps because, wouldn't you know it, the company's recently introduced Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 inventory is nearly depleted. "Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 are close to selling out. All those buyers are gonna need apps. Your move: developer.microsoft.com," Microsoft tweeted on Friday. We hope sales of Microsoft's second generation... Read more...
We were on hand at Microsoft's unveiling of its Surface 2 and Surface 2 Pro, and having seen and played with these second generation devices in person, we can say we're much more enthused with these products than their first generation siblings. They're fast, well configured, and sport several improvements for a better all-around experience. Even the keyboard is improved. Be that as it may, there's definitely a market for 7-inch and 8-inch tablets these days, and it's one Microsoft doesn't yet cater to with its Surface products. However, that's going to change. We don't know exactly when or what... Read more...

Let's stop harping on it. We've already discussed Microsoft's failures and shortcomings with their first generation of Surface and Surface RT devices. The company's $900 million dollar mistake has been bounced around along with Steve Ballmer's tenure ad nauseam and so it's probably no surprise that more than a few pundits and analysts are sounding off so negatively regarding Microsoft's recent Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 unveiling earlier this week.  They're too big, too expensive, not retina, too "Windows RT," whatever.  What is it about Microsoft that seemingly draws such a critical... There's really no arguing the fact that Microsoft slipped with its first generation Surface strategy, but rather than wave the white flag, the Redmond outfit picked itself up, dusted off its britches and listened to user feedback.  Today, in New York, Microsoft held a press event unveiling its new Surface 2 products and the usual superlatives apply -- thinner, lighter, faster, better. Microsoft says that Surface 2 and Surface 2 Pro both benefit from "significant updates." Among them are improvements to processing power, better battery life, display and camera resolution upgrades, and a niftier... Read more...
Much to the chagrin of Acer and Microsoft's other hardware partners who are less than thrilled with the Redmond company's decision to launch a Windows 8-based tablet of its own, it appears Microsoft's Surface strategy isn't going to be a one-and-done affair, after all. Instead, recent reports suggest Microsoft is already working on a second generation Surface tablet. More than a dozen job advertisements were noticed on Microsoft's Careers website between June and August in which the Redmond outfit said the Surface team is "currently building the next generation [of] devices that fully express the...
