Toshiba and SanDisk announced the joint development of what they claim is the world's first 48-layer three dimensional stacked cell structure flash memory, otherwise known as BiCS (Bit Cost Scalable), a 2-bit-per-cell 128-gigabit (16 gigabytes) device. It's called the SanDisk Extreme PRO, and in case you can't tell by the "PRO" designation, the use of all-caps should let you know that SanDisk means serious business here. All kidding aside, this really is a performance-oriented SSD. Samsung has started mass producing what it claims is the industry's first high-performance, 3-bit NAND-based solid state drive (SSD) -- PM853T -- for servers and data centers. According to Samsung, the new SSD option will make it easier for data centers to manage workloads related to social networking, web browsing, and email, as well as enhance operation efficiency. If you've been reluctantly holding on tight to your aging mechanical hard disk drive (HDD) because of the comparatively high price of a solid state drive (SSD), this might be the year you finally make the jump to faster storage. Why is that? NAND flash memory prices are coming down, which means less expensive SSDs could be on the horizon. That's not to say that SSD prices will close the gap with HDD pricing -- that might never happen -- but they'll certainly become more affordable.
